SPECIALITY "INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES"

The preparation on this speciality is organized by the department of Information and Computer Systems of Petersburg state transport university, on compensation base inclusively.
First enrolment on the speciality Information Systems in Engineering and Production Processes took place in 1997.
Information systems (IS) is the area of science and technology, which includes combination of means, methods and facilities of human activity, oriented on creation and usage of information collection, storage, transfer and processing systems.
The objects of engineering-system analysts’ professional activity are informational systems and networks, their mathematical, informational and software support, means and methods of projecting, production and exploitation of technical and program IS in different fields, as for instance, at railway transport.
During the whole education period students of this department study license softwares Visual C++, NET, programming on C++, C#, Java languages, they practice with data manager Oracle 11g and programming aids Internet-application on its base, including PL/SQL, Java, PHP and other languages. Using programs of Adobe company, students master methods of professional design and Web-sites development.
Students study artificial intelligence systems, computer system modeling, modern information technologies, multimedia technologies, microprocessor systems of latest generations, programming methods on machine-specific languages. Students are well prepared in information systems at railway transport, as well as in operation organization and management.
The professors of the department give lectures on general professional and specialized subjects: information technologies, information processes and systems theory, information networks, computers and systems architecture, programming technologies, multimedia technologies, information safety and information protection, intellectual information systems, information systems design and many others. The department possesses modern equipment and teaching base.
The department’s students undergo practical training at branches of railway informatization enterprises, Russian branches of world-known companies and quite often go for training abroad.
Undergraduates participate in the department’s international activity – annual international conference “Infotrance”, international European program “First”, oriented to student exchange with Technical University in Reechimaki (Finland); students are involved in scientific-research work, conducted by department’s officers.
Graduates of the department are guaranteed to work at data-processing centers at Oktyabrskaya Railway with an opportunity to develop and maintain information systems at any other enterprises and companies of this area, not to mention computer companies of the city. High education level gives an opportunity to work successfully at computer companies of Western Europe and USA.
The department was founded in 1961 by professor A.A. Euler, and now it is famous for its achievements in various modern information technologies. The choice in favor of the department “Information and Computer Systems” at PSTU is a right choice, which guarantees perfect study conditions, educational opportunity of the highest quality and possibility, ensures well-paid, interesting and stimulating job in the field of information technologies.
Future engineer should:
• State, possessing the information about infrastructure, technique and technologies of railway transport and automated information processing of transport, major scientific-technical problems of IS creation on railway transport and identify their connection with related fields; also formulate main technical-economical indices and solve the problems of IS and it’s elements development;
• Choose interface facilities when constructing IS, estimate their reliability, chose information protection methods and provision of information safety, also choose presentation and transfer means information of raw information about transport processes and railway objects;
• Plan IS operational service.

Future engineer should know:
• Strategies and methods of information processing about transport processes and railway transport objects and about different transport means interaction;
• Methods of IS characteristics analysis and justification, and methods of their design, system analysis and interfaces;
• Evaluation of reliability, collection systems analysis and transfer of information about transport situation and objects, in addition, IS operational service organization.

The demand for information systems and specialists in information technologies is constantly growing. According to the data of UNESCO, at present in developed countries computer systems are used at more than 50% working places in enterprises. Manpower resources move from material production to information area.

Every school leaver, when choosing future speciality, should take this information into the consideration.
